Recharge Your AC Refrigerant

Low refrigerant is the most common reason an AC stops cooling. You can recharge it yourself with a kit from any auto parts store — no special training required. This guide walks you through it safely.

    Confirm your refrigerant type

    Most cars made before 2021 use R-134a. Newer cars may use R-1234yf, which requires a different kit. Check the sticker under your hood near the AC components or in your owner's manual.

    The low-pressure service port (where you connect the kit) is usually labeled and has a specific fitting that only accepts the correct refrigerant type.

    Start the car and turn AC to max

    Start the engine and set the AC to maximum cold, highest fan speed. This ensures the compressor is running and you get an accurate pressure reading.

    Let the car run for a few minutes before checking pressure so the system stabilizes.

    Locate the low-pressure service port

    Find the low-pressure port — it's on the larger of the two AC lines (the suction line). It has a blue or black cap marked 'L' or 'LOW'. The high-pressure port has a red or smaller cap — do not use this one.

    The low-pressure port fitting is larger than the high-pressure port, so the kit hose will only fit the correct one.

    Check the current pressure

    Connect the recharge hose to the low-pressure port (don't pierce the can yet). The gauge will show your current pressure. Compare to the chart on the kit — pressure varies with temperature.

    If the pressure is already in the normal range, low refrigerant may not be your problem.

    Add refrigerant slowly

    Pierce the can by turning the valve on the kit. Hold the can upright and add refrigerant in short bursts — 5–10 seconds at a time. Check the gauge between bursts. Stop when you reach the target pressure.

    Overfilling is worse than underfilling. Go slowly and check often.

    Test and disconnect

    Once pressure is in range, check the air temperature at the vents — it should be noticeably colder. Disconnect the hose from the service port and replace the cap.

    If the AC is still not cold after recharging, there may be a larger issue. Have a shop inspect the system.
