Replace Your Cabin Air Filter

Your cabin air filter cleans the air coming into your car through the vents. A clogged one reduces airflow, makes your AC work harder, and can cause musty smells. Replacing it is one of the easiest swaps on any car.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. 1

Find your cabin air filter location

Most cabin air filters are behind the glove box, under the dashboard on the passenger side, or under the hood near the base of the windshield. Check your owner's manual for your specific car.

Search your car's make, model, and year plus 'cabin air filter location' on YouTube — there's almost certainly a video for your exact car.

  2. 2

    Access the filter housing

For glove box access: open the glove box, press the sides inward to release the stops, and let it drop down. This reveals the filter housing behind it. For under-dash access: look for a rectangular cover panel that unclips.

Take a photo before you start so you remember how everything goes back together.

  3. 3

    Remove the old filter

Slide or pull out the old filter. Note which direction it's facing — there's usually an arrow showing airflow direction. Hold it up to the light — if it's gray, brown, or has visible debris, it definitely needed replacing.

Some filters are folded accordion-style. Unfold one end to see how dirty it really is.

  4. 4

    Install the new filter

Slide the new filter in with the airflow arrow pointing in the same direction as the old one. Make sure it's fully seated and the edges are flush.

If there's no arrow on the filter, the airflow direction is usually toward the engine (away from the passenger compartment).

  5. 5

    Reassemble and test

Close the filter housing, swing the glove box back up until it clicks into place, and test your AC. You should notice improved airflow immediately.

Replace your cabin air filter every 15,000–25,000 miles, or once a year if you drive in dusty conditions.

You did it.

Shops charge $50–$80 for this job. You're about to do it in 10 minutes for the cost of the filter.
