Check & Inflate Tire Pressure

Properly inflated tires are safer, last longer, and improve your fuel economy. This is a 5-minute task you should do once a month — and it's one of the easiest things you can do for your car.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. 1

Find the correct pressure for your tires

The recommended pressure for your tires is on a sticker inside your driver's door jamb — not on the tire itself. The number on the tire is the maximum pressure, not the recommended pressure.

Front and rear tires sometimes have different recommended pressures. Check both.

  2. 2

    Remove the valve cap

Each tire has a small valve stem sticking out near the rim. Unscrew the small cap and set it somewhere safe — they're easy to lose.

Keep a few spare valve caps in your glove box. They're less than $1 each.

  3. 3

    Check the pressure

Press your tire gauge firmly onto the valve stem. You'll hear a brief hiss — that's normal. Read the pressure. Compare it to the recommended pressure from your door sticker.

If you get an inconsistent reading, try again — it takes a little practice to seat the gauge properly.

  4. 4

    Add air if needed

If the pressure is low, use an air compressor or gas station pump to add air. Add a few seconds of air at a time, then check again. It's easy to overfill.

Most gas station air pumps have a built-in gauge. Set your target pressure before you start.

  5. 5

    Release air if overfilled

If you accidentally overfill, use the small pin inside the valve stem to release air. Press it briefly, check the pressure, and repeat until you're at the right level.

A pen cap or fingernail works to press the pin. You don't need a special tool.

  6. 6

Replace the valve cap and repeat

Screw the valve cap back on and move to the next tire. Don't forget the spare — a flat spare is useless when you need it.

Set a monthly phone reminder to check your tire pressure. It takes 5 minutes and can save you from a blowout.

You did it.

This is genuinely one of the easiest car tasks there is. Once you've done it, you'll wonder why you ever paid for it.
