Replace Windshield Wiper Blades

Streaky or squeaky wipers are a safety hazard — and replacing them takes 5 minutes with no tools. This is one of the most satisfying DIY car tasks because it's so easy and the improvement is immediate.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. 1

    Buy the right blades

Wiper blades are not universal — they come in different lengths for different cars, and sometimes the driver and passenger sides are different sizes. Bring your car's make, model, and year to the auto parts store and they'll look up the right ones.

Most stores have a lookup book in the wiper aisle. It takes 30 seconds.

  2. 2

    Lift the wiper arm

Pull the wiper arm away from the windshield until it locks in the upright position. It should stay up on its own.

If you're replacing both blades, do one at a time so you always have a reference for how it goes back together.

  3. 3

    Release the old blade

Look at where the blade connects to the arm — there's usually a small tab or button. Press it and pivot the blade to release it from the hook. Slide the old blade off.

There are a few different connector types. Your new blades will come with instructions and often adapters for different arm styles.

  4. 4

    Attach the new blade

Slide the new blade onto the arm hook until it clicks into place. Give it a gentle tug to make sure it's secure.

If it doesn't click, check that you're using the right adapter for your arm style.

  5. 5

    Lower the arm and test

Gently lower the wiper arm back onto the windshield. Repeat for the other blade. Run your wipers with washer fluid to test — they should glide smoothly with no streaking.

Replace wiper blades every 6–12 months, or whenever you notice streaking or skipping.

You did it.

This is the most satisfying 5-minute car fix. The difference between old and new wipers in the rain is night and day.
